This week, during our cooking session, we have used another harvest fruit to make a delicious sweet treat. We used pumpkins to bake pumpkin cake. Working together, we measured, mixed, chopped and stirred the ingredients before placing into the oven. Kate, Michelle and Dan, our art teacher, all commented how wonderful our cake tasted!
We have been learning about the different signs of Autumn, this week. We know that during the Autumn months, September, October and November the leaves on the trees begin to change colour. This is because there are reduced periods of sunlight. We have also learnt that the weather changes as we move from Summer to Autumn. We have enjoyed engaging in a variety of Autumn crafts!
Hiba is our Champion of the Week for Fox class, this week. Hiba is a fabulous role model for the children at Oakwood as she is always displaying our school Golden Rules. She listens and engages beautifully during class activities.
During our woodland adventures, this week, we have started to think about the autumnal changes that are happening. We collected a range of woodland materials to make our own autumn crowns. We noticed that some leaves were green, some were orange and some were crispy brown.
In Maths, we have been learning about manipulating shapes by rotating. We know that rotate means the same as turn. Sometimes shapes need to be rotated in order to fit perfectly. We have been completing lots of tangram puzzles by selecting and rotating different shapes.
Seth is our Champion of the Week, this week! We are all so impressed how determined Seth has been with his toileting. He has been growing in independence and confidence in asking and using the toilet. You are simply amazing!
This week, we have started to learn about Harvest Festival. We now know that Harvest Festivals celebrate the time of year when crops have been gathered from the field and people can reflect and show thanks for the food that they have. Celebrations differ all around the world but many countries share special food, sing and dance or even give presents. We are going to continue learning and engaging in a range of Harvest activities, in preparation for our Harvest assembly with Kelvin, in the coming weeks.
Linked with our Harvest learning, we have used vegetables – peppers and sweetcorn, to create savoury muffins during our cooking session. We chopped, poured and mixed the ingredients together before watching them rise in the oven. They were truly delicious!
Our physical development has continued to improve, this week, through use of our secondary bikes and scooters. We all look forward to our weekly session as it not only develops strength in our legs and core, it also develops our spatial awareness.
Our ‘Champion of the Week’ is Roman! This week, Roman has impressed us so much with his fantastic writing. Roman used his understanding of the story, ‘The Three Little Pigs’, vocabulary from colourful semantic sessions and his RWI knowledge to write an amazing retell of the story! Wow Roman!
We returned to Morrisons, on Monday, to collect our ingredients for cooking. On our list this week was, bread flour, yeast and eggs. Pat, the lady on the checkout, kindly let us have a go at scanning the items on the till that we were buying.
On Monday, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring our new soft play area! We worked on our physical development, in particular developing our gross motor skills. We rolled, crawled and jumped around the spaces, whilst spending time with our friends.
Today, we have spent time in the new secondary STEM room. We have enjoyed exploring the new environment and using a range of different technologies. We are beginning to develop our programming skills by using Beebots, Code-a-pillars and Glow and Go Bots.
Over the next few weeks, we are going to be learning about Harvest. To begin our celebrations, we have learnt about wheat. We have discussed where wheat comes from and how it is used to make flour. Have a look at our photos, from our cooking session, this week, where we have made our own bread! It was amazing watching the yeast help our dough to rise. We have even learnt a new cooking technique – kneading.
Our ‘Champion of the Week’ is Alfie. Alfie’s has received this for being calm and brave on his recent visit to the dentist. Alfie has been practising all week, how to open his mouth wide so that the dentist could check his teeth. He sat on the chair and was so still and patient. We are so proud of you Alfie! Well done!
This week, we visited Morrisons, in Aldridge, for our community session. We used our shopping list to ensure we found all of the ingredients to make our pigs in pastry blankets. We had to locate, sausage meat, veggie sausages, puff pastry, eggs and flour. We are getting so good at working out which aisles we might need to look down for certain items.
We have continued to read our topic story, ‘The Three Little Pigs’ by Nick Sharratt. In the story, the three little pigs use different materials to build their homes. The first little pig uses straw, the second little pig uses sticks and the third little pig uses bricks. In science, we wanted to investigate which materials we thought would be best to use to build a house, to stop that pesky Big Bad Wolf blowing it down. In small groups, during our science lesson, we used paper, mega blocks, sticks and sugar cubes to build our own houses. We predicted that the “strong” mega blocks would be best to build our house, just like in the story.
Using a fan, to act as the Big Bad Wolf, we put our houses to the test. The paper and the stick houses fell down straight away! The sugar cubes and the mega block houses managed to stay standing. Some of us practised our huffing and puffing to try the best material. With some mighty huffs and puffs, the sugar cube house fell down, meaning that the mega block house was the strongest material to build a house from.
Listen along to ‘The Three Little Pigs’ story at home too!
We have enjoyed visiting the woodland area again, this week. On Monday, we used natural materials to create our family portraits. We have been thinking about who lives in our houses and used this to represent our different family members, including our pets. We thought carefully about how big or small we should make our different family members.
Our champion in Fox class this week is Ollie. Ollie has impressed us with his fantastic English work, linked with our ‘Three Little Pigs’ story. This week, we have been working on sequencing the main events from the story. Ollie was able to do this independently, with fantastic accuracy. He also recalled lots of phrases that he remembered from the story. Well done Ollie!
Our first community visit of this school year took us to B and M in Aldridge. We navigated ourselves around the aisles to find our cooking ingredients. We needed to find porridge oats, golden syrup, brown sugar and chocolate. What do you think we could be baking?
On Monday, we explored the forest area in our first woodland session. We continued to explore ‘All About Me’ by collecting natural materials such as leaves, twigs, bark and pebbles to create self-portraits. Again, we thought about what features we needed to create our faces and where they should be placed. Have a look at our super creations!
Once our faces were completed, we had some time to explore our woodland area. There was lots of time for climbing, digging and building!
This week, during our cooking session, we have create sticky flapjack bricks, linked to our new story, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We had to follow instructions, measure ingredients and use a range of cooking utensils.
Logan is our deserving Fox Champion, this week! He has joined Foxes class and settled in amazingly. Logan has made fantastic relationships with his peers, is following our class routine and helping around the classroom. We are all so proud of you! Well done Logan.
A warm welcome to the Foxes class blog! Here you will find weekly updates of all the wonderful things we have been getting up to in school. This year, the Foxes class team is made up of Nicola, our class teacher and Catherine, Finely, Jade and Sophie, our teaching assistants.
This half-term, we will be exploring learning around our new topic, ‘No Place Like Home’. Here you can find our curriculum coverage, outlining the key learning for the Autumn term.
Our first three days of the school year have been so busy. We have been getting to know our class peers, becoming familiar with our new environments and completing work around the topic of ‘All About Me’. We have been thinking how we are all different.
During our cooking session, the children have revisited how to peel and chop a range of fruits. We used these skills to carefully chop the fruit into different shapes to replicate the different parts of our face. Have a look at some of our funny faces!
Our champion in Fox class, this week, is Oakley! Oakley started our school on Wednesday and has settled into school life beautifully. We all know how tricky it can be when doing something new but Oakley has coped so well. He has been working really hard to follow our class routine and develop relationships with his new peers and adults! Well done Oakley! We are all so proud of you.
