Happy Easter Hedgehogs

What an absolutely fantastic way to end our spring term. This week we have been learning all about Easter and how it may be celebrated. We have enjoyed accessing lots of different Easter tuff trays including egg hunts, rabbits and lots of chicks.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our workshop on Monday, the children all really enjoyed seeing you and sharing in some of the work they complete at school. The children all looked fantastic in their Easter bunny headbands! 🐰

We have enjoyed lots of fun, Easter themed bucket times this week including throwing plastic eggs filled with lots of exciting things. For our stage 3 we took it in turns to throw plastic eggs filled with green rice and tried to catch it, we all laughed when it all fell out on the floor!

Upper primary wrote to local shops and supermarkets and had some Easter treats donated to school to help us celebrate. We had toast and jam along with crumpets which we all really enjoyed and the children did so well spreading the butter and jam. Thank you to all who helped in allowing us this opportunity.

In swimming this week the children were focussing on floating skills. The children practised floating on both their front and back and then rolled over in the water whilst practising how to kick their legs.

On Friday, we enjoyed celebrating the Hindu festival Holi. We decided that throwing powder paint at each other may be a little messy so instead we used colourful shredded paper to throw over us. The children all had a fantastic time watching it fall on them and throwing it at others.

Our week ended with a fantastic Easter egg hunt around the school where we had to look high and low for clues that the Easter bunny had left before returning to the classroom to find all our Easter eggs had been left on the tables!

We hope all our children and families have a fantastic break and we look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks 🦔

All about Spring and Easter

This week we have started learning all about Spring. We have thought about some things that we may see during Spring time including rabbits, sheep, lambs, flowers and eggs. During bucket time this week we enjoyed watching eggs smash onto the tuff tray with all the yolk oozing out! We got creative with kitchen sponges and used different colours to paint the sponges then printed them onto a piece of paper to create butterflies. They were absolutely beautiful and have really brightened up our displays in class. 🦋

During our cooking lesson this week we enjoyed making Easter nest cakes. The children are getting so good at washing their hands before cooking now and are showing good waiting before eating their finished product, which is particularly challenging when it involves chocolate! We used aided language displays to choose which ingredients we needed to make our Easter cakes and demonstrated skills such as pouring, mixing and breaking. After all that hard work the children enjoyed eating their cakes and we had lots of chocolatey faces! 🍫

We were all amazed with how well all of hedgehogs did during our swimming lesson this week. The children’s confidence is growing week by week and this week the children explored moving through the pool. We walked round the pool, used the pool noodles to float and move and swam under the bridge (with a little bit of support). The favourite game this week was to spin round in circles using the pool noodles and an adult supporting. Lots of giggles were heard during this game!

Earlier this term we were given brand new parachutes to support with our learning and the children have had a fantastic time using them this week. We played popcorn, where we have to work as a team to keep the balls on the parachute which is a lot harder than it sounds then took it in turns to have the parachute wrapped around us. The children waited so patiently for their turn during this activity and supported in allowing other children to have a go. We then used the parachute again during our music session with Bev, where some bunnies had fallen asleep on the parachute and we had to wake them all up by shaking it!

Friday was Red Nose Day and it was lovely seeing all the children dressed in red. We made our very own red noses in class and enjoyed seeing what we all looked like with our red noses in front of our face!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we’ll see you all on Monday. Don’t forget Monday is our parent activity day where we will have lots of fun activities for you to do with your children in school 🦔.

Mothers day and World Book day

What another fantastic week we have had in Hedgehogs class.

During our problem solving lessons this week we have been exploring capacity.  We have used both dry and wet materials to explore filling and emptying containers of different sizes.  The children worked really hard to compare different quantities and found that it was quicker to fill up the smaller containers than the large.  All the children really enjoyed these activities ang engaged well with the activities.

This week we have completed our wheel-a-thon to raise money towards a new minibus for school.  The children had a fantastic time whizzing round the playground on the scooters and bikes. We all had a great time seeing how many laps we could go round the track playground with 10 being our best score!

We have been learning about Mother’s day this week and have thought about all the lovely things that the women in our lives do for us to help, support and love us.  We have enjoyed singing a special Mother’s day song during our music session with Bev, have used lego bricks to paint a special surprise for those special women in our lives and have enjoyed role playing.

During our weekly swimming lesson this week we had a brilliant time walking under a bridge made out of a woggle that got lower and lower each time.  We explored capacity some more by filling and emptying the teapots and watering cans and enjoyed splashing and moving about in the water.

Thursday was World Book Day where we were focussing on the colour monster story.  It was so lovely to see all the children dressed in their favourite colour.  We had a special bucket time where we watched colour monsters be created using dyed spaghetti which we then really enjoyed exploring later on in the day.  We used sensory bottles and cloths to choose our favourite colour monster and used puppets to act out different emotions.  The children had a brilliant time celebrating this special day.

Finally, on Friday we enjoyed our cooking session where we made peppermint creams.  The children enjoyed using the sieve to sift icing sugar into the bowl and then used the wooden spoon to mix egg whites into the bowl.  We then had to mould the dough into small round circles and enjoyed drizzling chocolate over the top.  As always, our favourite part of cooking is eating our creations!

We hope all our children and families have a lovely weekend and we’ll see you all on Monday. 🦔

Polar bears and walruses

This week we have had a brilliant time exploring even more animals that live in cold areas.  We have learnt all about penguins and have enjoyed singing counting songs about penguins diving into the water. We then moved onto learning all about polar bears. We have made beautiful polar bear pictures using our handprints to make the polar bear’s body. We carefully used scissors to cut out our handprints then used our ripping and tearing skills to rip paper to create icebergs for the background of our picture. The end results have gone up on display in our classroom and look fantastic!

We really enjoyed swimming this week and are recognising pool safety rules more. We make sure we walk around the pool area and use the stairs carefully to get into the pool. During this weeks session we have developed a new game involving the adults being hungry sharks and the children had to move around the water to avoid being eaten! This was a great hit and there were lots of laughter and giggles to be heard!

Back at school we have been doing some cooking this week to make polar bear biscuits. First, we washed our hands with warm, soapy water before getting our ingredients ready. We used an ALD to request different ingredients and equipment that we needed, starting with icing to coat our biscuit in. Once we had spread our icing,  we carefully used a knife to cut a banana into circles to create the polar bear’s nose and ears. Finally, we used a smartie for the nose and chocolate drops for eyes before it was time to try our creation.

Finally, we learnt all about walruses and recognised that they have long tusks and flippers. We followed picture instructions to create our very own walruses which have joined our polar bears on display!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we’ll see you on Monday 🦔
